Before the long -awaited exit Mafia 3 A month remains, and we still know catastrophically little about what to expect from the new team of developers. At Gamescom, we managed to talk with the executive producer of the Hangar 13 studio Andy Wilson about where the series about mafia showdowns in America is moving.
New World, new showdowns
– How is the development of the new Mafia 3 in the hands of your studio?
Andy Wilson: We are all here part of one large family 2K. At one point, the company decided to assemble a strong team to work on Mafia 3 and establish a new studio in Novato (California). Our studio consists of industry veterans, people working on Bioshock, Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Dead Space, Splinter Cell, Saints Row, Far Cry, Infamous ..
– Are there any people who worked in the original 2K CZECH team (former Illusion SoftWorks)?
Andy Wilson: As far as I know, no one from the very first team is left, but we work tightly with the creators of the second part.
– Since you are cooperating with the Czech studio, is it worth expecting the return of old heroes?
Andy Wilson: The action of the games of the series takes place in one world, it is one universe, and it would be strange to ignore the characters of the previous parts. Players will certainly meet Vito Skallett (protagonist of the second part) and find out what happened to him after the murder of Falcone. Of course, one thing will not be limited to Vito, but I can’t tell more than yet.
-In the presentation, you showed new areas of New Bordo. Tell us more about them.
Andy Wilson: I would love to talk about them if I remembered which areas we showed in the presentation … We will have a huge piece of Bayou fantom-“wild land” New Bordo, plus nine more areas. This is our own vision of the New Orleans. French Ward is especially interesting in this regard – the area of the eternal carnival, it is he who is most like the New Orleans in the midst of Mardi Gra. The opposite of him is TickFaw Harbour, a port area full of smugglers. And there is Delray Hollow – the city “reservation” for black and Latinos, where Lincoln Clay, the new main character grew up.
And of course, we could not do without a fashionable area for the white rich – Frisco Fields.
Each area has its own ecosystem and shows its aspect of the rapid life of the city. No matter how strange it may sound, we have invested a lot of efforts that it is believable to simulate how crimes are committed in each of the areas, how the family of Sal Markano pierces money from the townspeople. For example, Uncle Lou and his system of brothels are very “entertaining” – all this can be seen on the streets of the city.
– At one time, Team Bondi when creating L.A. Noire relied on the historical architectural allusions of Los Angeles. Will we see the real buildings of the New Orleans?
Andy Wilson: We were inspired by him, but did not set ourselves the task of directly copying the city. We wanted to convey the atmosphere, the mood of the New Orleans, and, it seems to me, we succeeded.
When the Italians got
– Throughout the history of the series, we always played for Italians, and here – such an unexpected choice of the protagonist. Why Clay?
Andy Wilson: From the very beginning of the development, we aimed precisely in the 1960s. The criminal situation in New Orleans of those times was significantly different from family wars in the same New York of the 1940-50s. There was only one family dictating class privileges and living conditions of the whole region.
It seemed to us boring to tell another story of a simple Italian boy from the lower. It is much more interesting to observe how the story of the character develops, to which the social environment is hostile a priori.
– In the new video, you showed a mission where Lincoln Clai makes your way to the "account" of the family of Markano Tony Derasio to get rid of him. Here the player could quietly make his way through Tony's office or just shoot everyone in his path. So it will be possible to pass any mission?
Andy Wilson: We tried to make the players always have a choice. The choice that will suit their game style. The entire mission shown can be passed by unnoticed. In the final, of course, you still have to arrange a shootout with bald mafioso, but until this moment you decide how to fulfill this "contract".
Family values
-How are things with all sorts of side tasks and mini-players? Will we, for example, pacify the bars by pacing money in gambling?
Andy Wilson: The game will have the so -called “criminal tasks” to control the seized territory, which, in general, are the same side effects. What "street" tasks will come across to you depends on how you go through the main missions. For example, having dealt with Tony openly, you provoke chaos on the streets, undermining the entire criminal network of the chief accountant in a certain area. You will receive completely different tasks than if you decide to deal with Tony "quietly".
As for the pouring of money in a casino, we tried to be distracted by such things as little as possible. Why? Yes, at least so as not to distract the player from the main plot. In our game, almost everything that you do in the open world leaves an imprint on history, and vice versa.
Another example of side sessions are missions related to your partners. Accordingly, if you fulfill them, then your friends will trust you more. For example, if you manage to make friends with Vito, he may tell you what happened to Joe Barbaro. While you maintain good relations with Burk, the areas controlled by you bring more money, the street fighters fighting on your side are becoming stronger, and your partner can get you more cool cars. Similar situations in the game of a lot.
– Is it worth expecting the likeness of microeconomics like that that, say, in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhouse?
Andy Wilson: Our hero has a rather difficult task-to get to the main criminal authority of the New Bordo, and to crank it, Claire will need money and power. Three companions will help him – Cassandra, Burk and Vito. Each of them has its own sphere of influence and its own motives that they are guided by, uniting with you https://ninewin-gb-casino.co.uk/ against Markano.
And, of course, they are not altruists. Lincoln promises to partners the Golden Mountains – the section of the entire Raketyr business of the family. But this still needs to be achieved. You will gather your team in the old estate, and make decisions on one or another issues. There is no simulation of the economy as such in the game, but the financial prosperity of the hero, as well as the attitude of the three partners to it, depends on the fact that you will advise your ward. Your task as a leader is to just divide the spheres of influence. Otherwise, your partners will send you to hell and just leave the game, significantly complicating your life.
Blitz-survey
– This means that the game will have several endings?
Andy Wilson: Exactly. The finale of the game and who will belong to the city will depend on how you behave with partners.
– How many of them are in the game?
Andy Wilson: This is not so much about the spanning final katsets as in changing the world of the game. There is no bad or good ending here, it's all incredibly subjective. I can’t say the exact number of endings.
– Will players choose the level of complexity?
Andy Wilson: Certainly. The new "mafia" is still an action, with all traditional components. If you do not want to fool yourself with shooting, choose a low level of complexity and enjoy the story.
– How much time can passage take?
Andy Wilson: Honestly, I don’t even know the approximate figure, it all depends on the style of the game: do you want to jump from the mission to the mission or get lost in the open world, collecting every collection subject. We, of course, conducted pleestations, and people left for about a week to complete passage. No one got to the final before five days later.
– Do you plan to release DLC?
Andy Wilson: Together with the game you can buy Season Pass, which means that we will have additions. But we have not yet disclosed plans.
-Modern trends dictate the presence of multiplayer mode in any “decent” AAA game. Do you plan something like this in the mafia?
Andy Wilson: Our team is still aimed at telling the players a good story, and not to delight them with online shooters. We do not have any plans about the multiplayer and is not planned.
